Summary

Everything Handmaids wear is red: the colour of blood, which defines us。

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships。 She serves in the household of the Commander and his wife, and under the new social order she has only one purpose: once a month, she must lie on her back and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if they are fertile。 But Offred remembers the years before Gilead, when she was an independent woman who had a job, a family, and a name of her own。 Now, her memories and her will to survive are acts of rebellion。

Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid's Tale has long been a global phenomenon。 With this stunning graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood's modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renée Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before。

This was amazing! The ending was so good and I honestly didn’t think this would be as good as this。 I feel like this would be kind of difficult to understand fully if you have no prior knowledge from the show but I thought it was good。

This might be a graphic novel thing, I'm not very familiar with them, but it's missing way too many details。。。I haven't read the book, although I do want to, but it feels likeI've raced through a story that isn't supposed to be raced through。。。I've thought about giving it 3 stars for the beautiful illustrations, but it really irks me that the story doesn't seem complete enough to know what it's actually about。 A shame。 This might be a graphic novel thing, I'm not very familiar with them, but it's missing way too many details。。。I haven't read the book, although I do want to, but it feels likeI've raced through a story that isn't supposed to be raced through。。。I've thought about giving it 3 stars for the beautiful illustrations, but it really irks me that the story doesn't seem complete enough to know what it's actually about。 A shame。 。。。more

I loved the idea but preferred the story of the sequel, ‘The Testament’。 It was interesting and the concept of Gilead is such a terrifying yet realistic world that it really makes an impact as you read。 There was just something lost in the story’s plot that meant the novel hasn’t stuck with me after reading it。 It was still an enjoyable read and a book I’d recommend to others, especially those who don’t like reading much as I found the writing style very easy to read。 Amazing concept and world j I loved the idea but preferred the story of the sequel, ‘The Testament’。 It was interesting and the concept of Gilead is such a terrifying yet realistic world that it really makes an impact as you read。 There was just something lost in the story’s plot that meant the novel hasn’t stuck with me after reading it。 It was still an enjoyable read and a book I’d recommend to others, especially those who don’t like reading much as I found the writing style very easy to read。 Amazing concept and world just not as gripping and thought provoking as you’d think。 。。。more

I read this adaptation in effort to get to know the story without having to read the longer version and now I just want to know more。 Perhaps I'll end up reading the full version or checking out the series。 I read this adaptation in effort to get to know the story without having to read the longer version and now I just want to know more。 Perhaps I'll end up reading the full version or checking out the series。 。。。more

Not any less dark than the original book。 Though it has been awhile since I read it or seen the movie。 I did watch a couple episodes from the series, really too hard to take。 This felt a little squished, clearly bits are missing and I kind of remember which bits。 But it captures the spirit, the pressure, the awfulness。 And the art is fine。

A good adaptation of the book。

Generally good, I like the idea and warnings in here。 Was a good read to value what I have。 Since I'm actually pregnant at the moment。 The art and color choice here is amazing。 🤌🤌 Only thing is, some parts felt left out, or a bit vague。 Could've just been me reading it late at night。 Generally good, I like the idea and warnings in here。 Was a good read to value what I have。 Since I'm actually pregnant at the moment。 The art and color choice here is amazing。 🤌🤌 Only thing is, some parts felt left out, or a bit vague。 Could've just been me reading it late at night。 。。。more

I haven't read the book or watched the show before this, but man, amazing。 The world Atwood builds is terrifying and gives you like a billion things to think about and I can't imagine how horrifying it has to be for women to read this。 The art is great, the way it plays with the color red is really cool, especially in the scene right after the handmaidens beat up the one dude。 Kind of a must-read。 I haven't read the book or watched the show before this, but man, amazing。 The world Atwood builds is terrifying and gives you like a billion things to think about and I can't imagine how horrifying it has to be for women to read this。 The art is great, the way it plays with the color red is really cool, especially in the scene right after the handmaidens beat up the one dude。 Kind of a must-read。 。。。more

I really enjoyed seeing how the illustrators made this story into drawings。 It is very similar to how I imagined it。

The synopsis uses the words vivid and prophetic。 I would strongly agree but I will hope that this world never comes to be。 My blood pressure was elevated this entire story as I was thrashed around from anger to sadness to motivation following the women in this story。 I can't imagine the inhumanity these laws would introduce and it scares me that there are still people out there that think this is proper。 We have come so far as a society trying to introduce gender equality and Im also hoping it c The synopsis uses the words vivid and prophetic。 I would strongly agree but I will hope that this world never comes to be。 My blood pressure was elevated this entire story as I was thrashed around from anger to sadness to motivation following the women in this story。 I can't imagine the inhumanity these laws would introduce and it scares me that there are still people out there that think this is proper。 We have come so far as a society trying to introduce gender equality and Im also hoping it continues to mature into the ideal we all strive to achieve。 。。。more

I met the illustrator of this book at the 2022 Edmonton Expo。 She was lovely and drew a picture of Offred in my book。 I’ve only read The Handmaid’s Tale once and it was years ago。 As such, I feel the adaptation was good and stayed true to the book, especially the themes, but I cannot say how true。 I loved the use of colour to portray the tone and seeing the book come to life in images。 The art style was very pleasant on the eyes and beautifully done。 I felt the book was translated very well to g I met the illustrator of this book at the 2022 Edmonton Expo。 She was lovely and drew a picture of Offred in my book。 I’ve only read The Handmaid’s Tale once and it was years ago。 As such, I feel the adaptation was good and stayed true to the book, especially the themes, but I cannot say how true。 I loved the use of colour to portray the tone and seeing the book come to life in images。 The art style was very pleasant on the eyes and beautifully done。 I felt the book was translated very well to graphic novel and made the themes easy to understand in the short time it took to read。 That said, I’m not sure if I enjoyed reading this novel or not simply because of how horrifying it was。 I mean that in the best way。 It’s well written and truly terrifying。 I honestly feel that this is a future that could come to pass and it scares me。 Offred was a normal women and now she’s basically a concubine (I know the book said not a concubine, but I can’t remember the word it used)。 Women’s rights are just as important as men’s rights and I feel this book illustrates it much better than an essay ever could。 It’s a pivotal novel in feminism and I would highly recommend this adaptation! 4/5 January 29 2023 。。。more
